Sculptured Dance

One of the first times I visited Seattle Art Museum’s Olympic Sculpture Park was for a special performance of site-specific ballets commissioned by Pacific Northwest Ballet. The event, called Sculptured Dance was such a big hit that it became an annual event for several years. I’m not sure if I’m remembering correctly, but I think this was also the first time I saw Donald Byrd’s choreography.

Sleep of Reason

I got this poster of Goya’s famous print at a Seattle Art Museum exhibition on the invention of cartooning. “El sueño de la razón produce monstruos” (The sleep of reason produces monsters”) has hung on my wall ever since, and for the past few years has felt so much more timely than anything produced in the late 1700s should. I hope to be able to look at it with a little more distance in the future.

Mother Stump

A nurse log is a fallen tree that facilitates the growth of seedlings as it decays. This stump is providing the same service. We took this picture on a camping trip, but you can see a beautiful example of a nurse log at Seattle Art Museum’s Olympic Sculpture Park in downtown Seattle.
