Inflight Movies

These days, armchair travel is the only kind of travel, so it makes sense to write about movies. I watch a ton of movies, but ever since my first international flight, (LA to Copenhagen 1989) the movies I watch on an airplane have had a special sort of magic for me. The last time I got to travel, I was headed to Hong Kong. Here are the movies I watched on the plane.

Live Theater Film Experience – Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon: Le Mouvement Final

Sailor Moon Le Mouvement Final promo posterApparently, stage movies are a thing now. I only caught on last month, when I saw two within a week of each other. I’ve already mentioned the second one – NBC’s stage production of Jesus Christ Superstar that was broadcast live on Easter. The first one was so weird I have to blog about it. I saw a movie of a play about a cartoon. That’s right, I drove to Shoreline to see Sailor Moon: The Musical – Le Mouvement Final at the Crest.

I was just a little too old for the first generation of Sailor Moon. Ok, that’s an excuse. I watched Ranma ½ during the same years Sailor Moon was new. Anyway, I never got into Sailor Moon. But my kids did. They’ve read all the manga and dissect the differences between the anime reboots. My oldest was Sailor Mercury for Halloween. So when a friend tagged me on a facebook post announcing a Sailor Moon event at the Crest, I bought tickets for the whole family. Read More

Stuff I Wrote Lately

My blogging has taken a hit in 2015 as I have spent more time on writing things I get paid for. Sometimes I add links to these paid things on the Stuff I Wrote page, but sometimes I forget and fall behind. I recently updated Stuff I Wrote, as well as some of the Complete Contributions pages where I get all obsessive about documenting everything I ever wrote. But if you’re just wondering what I’ve done lately, here are links to things that ran in August and September.

I didn’t go to Bumbershoot this year, and whined about the reasons why here on the blog. But I snarked about Bumbershoot’s rejection of families at ParentMap, too.

After I wrote a couple stories about movies for ParentMap this summer, they gave me a movie column! It’s only for the autumn, and then we’ll see if it draws enough clicks to continue, but I am already having so much fun with it.

Better than the Book

I usually think the book was better but for this one I rounded up a list of book adaptations whose quality rivals the source material.

Coming Soon

A round up of the family-friendly theatrical releases in theaters now and looking forward through the end of the year.

I reviewed the first rep of Pacific Northwest Ballet’s new season, “See the Music.” (Spoiler: I loved it.) I also reviewed the Broadway revival of “Annie” at the Paramount. (Spoiler: Better than the movie.)

There’s No Place Like Oz

La Cenerentola booklet Seattle OperaWhen I watched Cinderella at Seattle Opera, I wished that I could see it through my child’s eyes. Soon after that, the whole family watched The Wizard of Oz. My opinion of the movie has changed with each viewing, evolving over time, as I have. This time I thought it would be fun to record the impressions of someone seeing it for the first time.

Here are the comments from my 8 year-old, with occasional responses from the rest of us, Mystery Science Theater-style. You know, except without the movie. Read More
