Music I Liked: Female Vocals

Edda from AngistWhen this post publishes, I will be off-grid in the North Cascades, where I don’t have access to new music discoveries. Instead, this week I’m going to talk about a musical pet peeve. I have a few of them: I hate the word “platter” to describe an album. Likewise, “slab” is overused. But the one that really boils my blood is “female vocals.” Those of you on the indie side of the spectrum may not know what I’m talking about, but I bet the metalheads do.

Two of the Coolest People in Iceland

One of the cool things about Reykjavik is that it is both a sophisticated European capitol and a small town. It is possible to walk down the street and run into members of two of your favorite bands, as basically happened here during Airwaves 2012 when Gyða, the guitar player for Angist, and Gummi, the founding drummer of Sólstafir, posed for this picture.

Angist is one of my favorite death metal bands, in large part due to Edda’s inhuman growl that sometimes give way to an eerie black metal wail. Although they don’t play live terribly often (the local scene just isn’t big enough to support a ton of heavy metal shows) I have had the good luck to see them perform each of the three times I’ve been to Iceland. This photo is from the first time – an official Airwaves show at a bar called Amsterdam in 2012.

My Head in the Amazon Cloud

I’m not the primary account holder, and I don’t understand how it works very well, but it’s a nice way to get music that I actually own downloaded to my phone.  We’ve begun the long, slow process of ripping our CD collection (somewhere around 500 CDs at last count, which was years ago) and uploading it to the cloud.
