Music I Liked – Hegemone and Maybe Pangyrist
As the weekend unfolded, I realized with a bit of panic that I didn’t really have any music to write about. Sofi Tukker has been on high rotation in my house this week, but I wrote about them last time. So with the limited time I had left, I dove into the blogs on a mission to find some new music. I found Hegemone, which I really liked, and Pangyrist which I – maybe liked?
Hegemone
On bandcamp, Hegemone has tags like “Poland,” “atmospheric black metal,” and “post-metal.” So I thought my chances were pretty good. And I was right. Their newest album, We Disappear, very satisfyingly scratched a musical itch.
Pangyrist
Pangyrist has tags like “progressive black metal” and “avantgarde” which also bode well. The tag that was missing was “kitchen sink.” Sometimes I like the sort of batshit noise that the kitchen sink approach generates (Anaal Nathrak is a good example). But the thing about music with a little bit of everything in it is that it is as likely to include you elements you don’t like as elements you do like. The good and the bad (in a subjective, personal taste sort of way) are both present in Pangyrist’s Heirurgy. And I think I’m okay with that? I don’t know if repeated listening will inure me to my less-favorite elements or if those elements will become increasingly annoying with repetition.
