Fremont Drinking Project
When we bought our house nearly 20 years ago, Fremont was Seattle’s funkiest neighborhood, famous for housing artists who couldn’t afford Capitol Hill. Ballard was known for fishing boats and elderly Norwegians. Our house was in the awkward space between those neighborhoods, an area affectionately known as Frelard. We assured ourselves that we really lived in Fremont. But even then, things were starting to change, and we joked that in 20 years we’d be trying to convince people that our house was actually in Ballard.
Ballard Brewery District
Recently we realized that while we were busy getting old, our drab, in-between neighborhood was getting cool. Specifically, its light industrial nature had proved particularly suitable to microbreweries. We now had more breweries in walking distance to our house than all of Seattle had when we moved here. Frelard was now The Ballard Brewery DistrictTM. Okay, I’m joking about the TM, but there is a passport, with a map and prizes and everything.
It’s time to get to know our neighborhood again.
Fremont Drinking Project
Being overachievers, we weren’t satisfied to only check out the eleven establishments on the map. After all, this is our home, and we should know it thoroughly. Plus, our home is slightly more to the Fremont side of things. So how could we leave out Fremont Brewing, all the way on the other side of the Troll (but still within walking distance)? And what about the other craft-focused drinking experiences, like the cidery down by the Fremont Bridge, or the (already down one, RIP Old Ballard Liquor Co.) distilleries in the neighborhood? So we made our own expanded map.
Now we have a map and a passport, we’re going to drink our way through Fremont. Naturally, the project will be documented here.
