Farewell Karel

Karel Cruz final bow at Pacific Northwest BalletI’ve attended regular season ballet performances since I was 18. But this is the first season that I’ve attended any of Pacific Northwest Ballet’s “extra” events – like performance previews, lectures, and now the Season Encore performance. Although it’s called a season encore, it’s not just a highlights reel of the most popular dances of the past season. The Encore program is also a farewell to company members who are leaving for other companies or retiring.

Some people listen to opera for that one perfect high C, but my ear is not refined enough to detect the subtler wonders of the art form. I’m not ashamed to admit that I’m drawn to opera for the spectacle. Seattle Opera’s newest chamber opera, O+E, was the opposite of their over-the-top main stage productions, and as a result, I liked it even better. Even without a single baritone.

Opera: come for the pageantry, stay for the beauty.

Last weekend I took my daughter to see the final program in Pacific Northwest Ballet’s 2017-2018 season. It was the mixed rep “Love and Ballet.” The program began with Christopher Wheeldon’s “Tide Harmonic” and the pas de deux from “After the Rain,” which I wrote about earlier this week. The other pieces in the program were Benjamin Millepied’s “Appassionata” and Justin Peck’s “Year of the Rabbit.” There were several reasons I was excited to for this program of non-narrative ballets. Stars on Ice at Key Arena with the Family

Stars on Ice Tour Poster 2018I planned to spend my entertainment dollars for May on tickets to NW Terrorfest. But my daughter’s heroes were on tour, so instead, the whole family got to go to Stars on Ice. The things we do for our kids. I’ve never really been a figure skating fan, but ever since we watched the anime Yuri!!! On Ice (it is a really great show), my daughter has been obsessed. This year I watched the Olympics with her, and for the first time since the 80’s, that meant figure skating instead of half pipe. In spite of myself, I got kind of into it. Not enough that I would have bought tickets for myself, but I admit, I was a little excited to see Adam Rippon, Mirai Nagasu, Nathan Chen and the Shibutanis skate in person.
