Cavalleria Rusticana Highlights

After missing most of Seattle Opera’s online programming this summer, I bought season tickets to make sure I don’t miss out this fall. Even though the season only runs through the end of the year, it contains more opera than a regular full season. Only it’s all online. The first “performance” was a highlights recital of Cavalleria rusticana. Based on the plot summary, I had my doubts about Cavalleria rusticana, but I know that beautiful music and the pageantry of live performances matter more than plot in opera. But how would it hold up without the spectacle of live performance?

Musings From the Seattle Dance Collective

Seattle Dance Collective continues its second season with the fourth of five pieces, Musings by Amanda Morgan. As usual, the piece premiered online on a Thursday. But by now, the individual pieces are beginning to feel like a program that is organized along a gradient of tradition. Beginning with the beautifully filmed ballet Home, the pieces become progressively more experimental. A Headlamp or Two felt like a film whose content happened to be dance. Musings feels like a multimedia artwork in which the media are film, dance, and spoken word.

Seattle Dance Collective Produces A Headlamp Or Two

Seattle Dance Collective continues its second season with the third of five pieces, A Headlamp or Two by Beth Terwilleger. On July 16, this unusual dance premiered, like the rest of them, online. But although every piece in the program so far has made good use of location and format to create something different from you would see on a regular season stage, A Headlamp or Two felt like film first and dance second. Which, considering how rarely those two art forms play well together, was lovely.

Seattle Dance Collective Continues with The Only Thing You See Now

Seattle Dance Collective is back with the second work for its odds-defying second season of five new works. The first of these, Home by Penny Saunders, premiered on July 2. The second one, The Only Thing You See Now by SeaPertls, premiered online July 9. Making the most of both location and format, The Only Thing You See Now perfectly expresses its origin.

Back from Break – Pandemic Homeschool Diaries

{Well, this is annoying. While working on the blog last weekend, I noticed this post, which I wrote at the end of April. It was scheduled to publish May 1, but for due to some mysterious technical glitch, it didn’t. Well, I hate to waste a blog post after taking the time to write it. So here it is now. Sorry about that.}

Coming back from a remarkably slothful spring break, in the sixth week since the school buildings closed, we entered our fifth week of pandemic homeschool instruction. Nobody was particularly excited to get back to work, and for the most part we skated by on the minimum effort. But it wasn’t all drudgery. We did some interesting things.
