Cell Phones in Iceland

When I travel internationally, I always buy a local SIM card (unless it’s a very short trip). Even when I’ve had cell phones with international calling plans, the roaming or international data charges were much more expensive than just getting a local card. I wrote a little bit about this when I went to China last year, but of course most of my international travel in recent years has been to Iceland. So of course I was very happy when I Heart Reykjavik saved me the trouble of writing up a post about buying Icelandic SIM cards. She’s pretty much covered everything.

The only thing I would add is that while Siminn is usually the best company, I had a terrible connection when I went to the Eistnaflug festival in the Eastfjords. I ended up switching to Nova, which for some reason seemed to work better in that region.

So, if you’re traveling to Iceland and trying to decide what to do about your phone, read this:

Why You Should Consider Buying An Icelandic SIM Card For Your Trip To Iceland

Reblog: Reykjavik AM Survival Guide

The I Heart Reykjavik blog ran this post about how to survive your first day in Iceland if you’ve arrived via WOW airlines, which land at 5 a.m. But the thing is, all the flights to Iceland on all the airlines from North America are overnight flights with early morning arrivals. You can usually count on Delta being a couple hours late and arriving closer to noon, but if you’re coming from North America, you will always be tired and you will generally hit town before anything is open. So I think this post is brilliant, and I plan to use it as my guide next time I go. You should too. Check it out.

Stuff I Wrote Lately

My blogging has taken a hit in 2015 as I have spent more time on writing things I get paid for. Sometimes I add links to these paid things on the Stuff I Wrote page, but sometimes I forget and fall behind. I recently updated Stuff I Wrote, as well as some of the Complete Contributions pages where I get all obsessive about documenting everything I ever wrote. But if you’re just wondering what I’ve done lately, here are links to things that ran in August and September.

I didn’t go to Bumbershoot this year, and whined about the reasons why here on the blog. But I snarked about Bumbershoot’s rejection of families at ParentMap, too.

After I wrote a couple stories about movies for ParentMap this summer, they gave me a movie column! It’s only for the autumn, and then we’ll see if it draws enough clicks to continue, but I am already having so much fun with it.

Better than the Book

I usually think the book was better but for this one I rounded up a list of book adaptations whose quality rivals the source material.

Coming Soon

A round up of the family-friendly theatrical releases in theaters now and looking forward through the end of the year.

I reviewed the first rep of Pacific Northwest Ballet’s new season, “See the Music.” (Spoiler: I loved it.) I also reviewed the Broadway revival of “Annie” at the Paramount. (Spoiler: Better than the movie.)

The Truth About Rejection

Have you heard about the writer whose goal was to collect 100 rejections in a year?

Have you heard about the writer who is trying to wallpaper his studio with rejection letters?

Good luck trying to find the origins of these stories – not because they aren’t real but because they are so common. My friend and neighbor, Marisa Vitiello, wrote a post recently about her experience on both sides of the rejection equation. As a working artist, she has been rejected and been responsible for rejecting the work of others.

I think most of us intellectually know the truth in her observations, but we secretly hope that each idea we send out in the world will be met with open arms. So we need constant reminders of the truth about rejection:

On Rejecting and Being Rejected
