A few years ago I was trying to improve as a photographer. Since then, I’ve kind of given up and reverted to cell phone snap shots. So I was impressed when I stumbled on a stash of flower photographs from that time period. Some of them were pretty good. I think this shot of bicolor daffodils in my front yard looks like it came from a flower catalog. I would buy them.

Crocuses, The First Sign of Spring

The maritime Pacific Northwest has pretty mild winters, so there is not really any time of year that is completely without flowers. Crocuses bloom at the same time as a lot of winter flowers – Sarcococca, hellebore, witch hazel. But for some reason, crocuses mean spring.

Swan Lake is almost the definition of “canon” for classical ballet. What could be more rigid and tradition-bound than the most famous ballet? It turns out, a lot of things can. Swan Lake has changed a lot from its premiere in 1877, and even today, every performance is a little different. Pacific Bonsai Museum

Tucked in behind an office park in Federal Way, the Pacific Bonsai Museum is a treasure trove of carefully maintained bonsai in a series of outdoor rooms with pale walls and raked gravel floors. Their hours are limited and the location is unlikely, but it’s a beautiful space that inspires even active little kids to contemplation.

Bluegrass Boys

These little boys performed at Doe Bay Fest a few years back under the name Brother for Sale. They play with their parents as the Crow Valley String Band. They played Doe Bay again last summer as Brograss.

Bluegrass is the heavy metal of folk music, if you follow me.  Whatever name they play under, these boys shred.
