Parenting Lessons from Seattle Opera’s Rigoletto

Some people dislike modern productions of old operas. These are often the same folks who think Shakespeare should always be performed in Elizabethan costume (but curiously, not by men in drag). Personally, I don’t agree. I mean, I can understand the appeal of a period piece. I adore reconstructions of historical costumes, houses, and technology where every last detail is true to the original. But the appeal is usually more intellectual than emotional. Dressing a story in historical costumes and sets doesn’t necessarily distance viewers from the humanity in the story, but it often does. And rigid conformity with past practice is literally the opposite of art. Plus, the original productions were usually anachronistic themselves. How a director chooses to frame a production is an artistic choice that can fundamentally alter viewers’ understanding of the story.

Carmen at Seattle Opera

This week has been all about Carmen for me. I am reviewing Seattle Opera’s new production elsewhere, but in preparation I’ve been listening to the music nonstop.

Carmen was the first opera I ever saw. In high school, my music teacher assigned the traveling production of Carmen (at the time my city didn’t have its own opera company) for extra credit. My only clear memory of the show was being startled awake by sound of a gunshot (which I now realize was the ending of Micaela’s aria when Don Jose catches Escamillo outside the bandits’ lair).

After this weekend, Carmen is one of my favorite operas, on par with Rigoletto. I have had Carmen’s “Habanera” stuck in my head since I heard since I heard it at Opera on Tap two weeks ago. And I will have the rest of the opera stuck in my head for a long time to come.

Youth Odyssey

This is turning into my winter of opera. First I was surprised to find The (R)evolution of Steve Jobs is not only a good opera, but also an enjoyable one and ended up buying tickets to see it again. Then I discovered the same thing about Seattle Opera’s youth performance Ulysses.

All Ages Opera

Expensive tickets, long run times, foreign languages, and a reputation for elitism – not to mention a propensity for wildly inappropriate story lines – makes opera a hard sell for families. Seattle area families have an advantage, though. The Youth Opera Project’s affordable opera designed expressly for children and families is a great way to test the opera waters.

Steve Jobs and the (R)evolution of Opera

Seattle Opera Steve Job's [R]Evolution Dress Rehearsal McCaw Hall

I was skeptical when I first saw Seattle Opera’s 2018/19 season. An opera about Steve Jobs? Then, when I read more about it, I became curious. I expected it to spark many conversations. What I did not expect was to actually like it. But The (R)evolution of Steve Jobs was a really good opera.
