Fancy Desserts

Although they are technically fruit, tomatoes are usually considered savory fare. But at the Friðheimar restaurant in Iceland, every day is Iron Chef, and the challenge ingredient is always tomatoes. Which means that even fancy desserts involve tomatoes.

Bird of Paradise

I saw this bird of paradise plant in the Azores, a place which seems like paradise to me. It’s too cool where I live for tropical plants like these to have much success. But they thrive in the Azores, which are not much warmer than the Pacific Northwest. But the temperate plants I’m used to also thrive in the paradisiacal Azores.

Secret Garden

The Secret Garden was one of my favorite books growing up. So I was delighted to discover a garden hidden away on the top level of the parking garage at McCaw Hall. Years ago, rather than wasting time looking for a “good” spot, I always drove straight to the rooftop when I came to see the ballet or the opera. Somewhere along the line (probably when I started wearing high heels?) I changed my strategy and started parking elsewhere. When I heard that the roof had been converted to a P-Patch, I had to confirm it for myself. And there it was, the UpGarden, a secret garden right across the street from the Seattle Center.

Sweet Peas

Sweet peas are supposed to be easy to grow, but I’ve never had much luck with them. That is a shame, because sweet peas are such lovely flowers.

Perfectly purple

They say there’s no such thing as a true blue rose. That may be true since the “blue” roses I’ve seen are all actually purple. Take this one for example. It’s called “Rhapsody in Blue,” which is a lovely name but in no way describes this perfectly purple bloom.
