Bookish Mural

bookish mural in Qingdao

China is better known for sprawling developments of faceless apartment towers, and for good reason: there are miles of them in every city. But Qingdao also has some of the best street art of any city I’ve ever visited, possibly including Reykjavik, and many of the best murals are on apartment buildings.

Qingdao is in Shandong province, which the wonderful book Oracle Bones informs me is where the titular oracle bones were found. Those carved bones are the earliest evidence of writing in the world. Shandong province was also the birthplace of Confucius, whose writings are a pillar of Chinese scholarship. So it’s not surprising that even their street art has a literary bent.

{By the way, a recent Google “On this day” alert sent me down a rabbit hole of neglected photos from the 2015 homeland trip I took with my then 10-year-old daughter. You can expect to see pictures of China in this Sunday 1000 Words space for a long time to come.}

Stars on Ice at Key Arena with the Family

Stars on Ice Tour Poster 2018I planned to spend my entertainment dollars for May on tickets to NW Terrorfest. But my daughter’s heroes were on tour, so instead, the whole family got to go to Stars on Ice. The things we do for our kids. I’ve never really been a figure skating fan, but ever since we watched the anime Yuri!!! On Ice (it is a really great show), my daughter has been obsessed. This year I watched the Olympics with her, and for the first time since the 80’s, that meant figure skating instead of half pipe. In spite of myself, I got kind of into it. Not enough that I would have bought tickets for myself, but I admit, I was a little excited to see Adam Rippon, Mirai Nagasu, Nathan Chen and the Shibutanis skate in person.

Even if you’re not into opera, you’ve heard of Aida. It’s one of the iconic operas like Carmen and Madame Butterfly. I am into opera, and I love Verdi, but the current production at Seattle Opera was my first experience of Aida.

Emergence, the ballet by Crystal Pite that lends its name to the mixed rep program wrapping up at Pacific Northwest Ballet this weekend, is one of my favorite ballets of all time. Like everyone else who saw its premiere at PNB in 2013, I fell in love with immediately. I was surprised when I rewatched it last weekend that it seemed almost completely different from what I remembered. But I still loved every minute of it. Read More

Not gonna lie. I didn’t really like RakU, the ballet that premiered in Seattle as part of Pacific Northwest Ballet’s Emergence program last week. Despite absolutely loving some elements, there were a couple things I just don’t think audiences should tolerate. Even so, I keep turning the piece over in my mind, worrying at it like a splinter that won’t come out. There’s just so much to say about RakU. Read More
