Perfectly purple

They say there’s no such thing as a true blue rose. That may be true since the “blue” roses I’ve seen are all actually purple. Take this one for example. It’s called “Rhapsody in Blue,” which is a lovely name but in no way describes this perfectly purple bloom.

The Intermission Project at PNB

As if I needed another reason to love my favorite local arts institutions, the way groups like Seattle Opera and Pacific Northwest Ballet have responded to the pandemic has been amazing. Not only have they managed to survive without their normal revenue streams in a time when live theater performances are banned, but they have produced new, creative work that would not have been possible – even conceivable – in normal times. The most recent example is Pacific Northwest Ballet’s Intermission Project, a midseason collection of short filmed ballets.

Questionable

It was midday on a busy street, so it’s not like anyone was being sneaky. That implies they are allowed to empty out whatever gas this is. Still… to quote the baby elephant in Disney’s Tarzan, it looks questionable to me.

Seattle Opera’s Cinematic Don Giovanni

Don Giovanni is what a lot of people would call a “problematic fave.” On the one hand, Mozart’s music is incredible. On the other hand, the title character is a rapist. I understand if you want to stop reading now. It’s impossible for contemporary viewers to gloss over or ignore Giovanni’s crimes, which are still too often ignored today. But art is supposed to ask questions, and there is a lot to unpack in Don Giovanni, especially in a nuanced production. Fortunately, Seattle Opera’s new film version of the opera faces the contradictions in Don Giovanni head on while also experimenting with format. The result is a complex and intriguing show that keeps you thinking long after you’ve hit the power button.

Pretty in Purple

For a couple of years I kept my hair purple. I loved it, and strangely, I felt more myself with purple hair than I ever do with my natural (or any natural) hair color. But it was a lot of work and got very expensive to maintain. Purple hair fades, so even if you take good care of it, you can’t just wait for roots to grow out. At one point, I carefully photographed my purple hair each week from the day I got my hair done until the next hair appointment to document the fade. I never got around to collecting those photos and putting them into a time progression blog post. But I still love this image of my purple hair at its darkest.
